Description

Peatland is located in the eastern part of Hiiu county, 5 km south of Kärdla. He is crossed by the Tuhala-Käina road. The peat formed by terrestrialisation a shallow remnant lake, feeds on precipitation and on groundwater, the recipient the Pihla stream. Peat lies on sand and loam. The area of ​​the peatland is 700 ha, of which 403.2 ha is peat deposit; registry card no. 520. There are economic probable reserves of peat 0.079 million tons and  potentially economic reserve 0.043 million tons of slightly decomposed  peat. Well-decomposed peat has 0.56 million tons of economic probable  reserves and 0.38 million tons of potentially reserves. In the Määvli  spreads wooded bog and fen woodland. There are 534 ha of eutrophic peat and 166 ha oligotrophic peat layers. The eutrophic peat consists of well-decomposed (38%) reed and wood-reed peat with ash content of 1.8%,  moisture content of 88% and peat thickness of 1.3 m. The oligotrophic peat layers are  located in the central part of the bog, where its upper part consists of slightly decomposed (12%) moss peat, the lower part of well-decomposed (41%) sedge, wood and Sphagnum peat. The thickness of the deposit is 1.8 m. Peat is suitable for horticultural  and as a fertilizer peat (Orru et al., 1988). The list of peatlands compiled by the Ministry of the Environment contains 158.4 ha in the deposit Määvli. (Regulation no. 87; 27.12.2019). The area of ​​the abandoned peat production field is 38.20 ha.
