Description

Peatland is located in an alvarian area on the northwestern border of Ida-Viru County. The Tallinn-Narva road passes 0.5 km south of it. The peat formed by terrestrialisation of the lake (there is a 1.16 m thick layer of lake mud under the peat) (Orru et al., 1975). The peatland feeds on precipitation, the Purtse and Erra river is the water recipeint. In the outskirts of the peatland there is a transitional bog woodland, in the bog area bog forest. The area of ​​peatland is 645 ha, of which 434.68 ha is peat deposit; registry card no. 540. The peat reserves of the Rannu deposit are potentially economic reserves (a protected area of ​​645 ha). Rannu peat deposit is only well-decomposed peat  with  reserves of 1.39 million tons potentially economic proved reserves  and 0.235 million tons of potentially economic  reserves. There are 423 ha of fen deposit and 222 ha of bog deposit. The fen peat deposit surrounds the bog deposit as a narrow zone and consists of moderately decomposed (28%) wood- reed peat, ash content  is 4.6%,moisture content is 89%, thickness of the peat layer is 2.5 ... 3.2 m. The bog deposit is in the central part of the bog. The upper part of the deposit (0.50 m) is formed by slightly decomposed (14%) S.fuscum peat, below there is poor wood peat. The thickness of the deposit is 3.4 ... 6.0 m, ash content is 2.8% and moisture content is 92% (Orru et al., 1975, 1992). Re-swamping was started in the milling fields. The area of ​​the abandoned peat production area is 41.47 ha.
