Description

Peatland is located in Hiiu County, on the Tahkuna Peninsula, 8 km northwest of the city of Kärdla, 0.7 km southeast of the Tahkuna-Kärdla road.  A wooded mire and wooded bog  spread in the Kodeste peatland. The area of ​​the peatland is 77 ha, of which 22 ha is peat deposit; 0.05 million tons of peat reserve is well-decomposed peat (Orru, 1995). There are 61 ha of eutrophic and mesotrophic peat layers.  7 ha is occupied by oligotrophic peat.  Peat layers are the well- decomposed(48%) reed peat with an ash content of 12.9% or moderately decomposed (28%) Sphagnum peat. The thickness of the deposit is 1.30 ... 1.70 m, moisture content is 87%. Mixed - bog peat is formed at the top by slightly decomposed (12%) S.fuscum peat, below moss and wood peat. The thickness of the deposit is 1.10 ... 1.60 m, the degree of decomposition is 28% (Allikvee et al., 1992). It is recommended to leave it  in its current state. Not included in the list of peatlands suitable for  extraction prepared by Ministry of Environment (Regulation no. 87; 27.12.2016).
