Peatland is located in the central part of Hiiu county, 9 km northwest of Käina. It formed by terrestrialisation of a shallow remnant lake, feeds on precipitation, and the Vaemla stream is the water recipient. The peat lies on the sand. The Loopsoo is a wooded bog.The area of the bog is 128 ha, of which 103 ha is peat deposit; 0.29 million tons of peat reserve are economic probable reserves well-decomposed peat (Orru, 1995). The peat layers consist of cotton-grass, cotton-grass-.Sphagnum, and pine-cotton-grass peat. The thickness of the deposit is 2.10 ... 2.40 m, ash content is 1.7%, moisture content is 92% (Allikvee et al., 1972). The majority of bog peat (95 ha, 0.3 million tons) is suitable for the production of humic substances, while the smaller part (60 ha, 0.2 million tons) is suitable for the production of peat wax. It is recommended to include the bog in the list of peatlands suitable for peat extraction (Regulation no. 87; 27.12.2016).
