Proposal of a Code for the Nomenclature of Trace-Fossils

In order to legalize binomial trace-fossil names, a draft code (independent of the existing international codes of botanical and zoological nomenclature) is presented, for possible consideration at a future international meeting. It is essentially morphographic and allows the inclusion under a single name of similar traces made by taxonomically different animals, as well as the retention of different names for dissimilar products of the activity of the same animal. At the same time it allows any classification or order (alphabetic, taxonomic, ethologic, preservational, etc.) to be used, according to the particular purposes for which such groupings are advantageous.
