Abstrakt

This paper documents a relatively diverse assemblage of macroborings from the Miocene of Carriacou in the Grenadines, Lesser Antilles. The borings occur in molluscan (most commonly) and scleractinian coral substrates associated mainly with the Middle Miocene Grand Bay Formation. The borings, represented by seven ichnogenera and at least 12 ichnospecies, are assigned to Caulostrepsis cretacea (Voight, 1971), C. spiralis Pickerill, Donovan and Portell (in press), C. taeniola Clarke, 1908, Entobia isp. or ispp., Gastrochaenolites cluniformis Kelly and Bromley, 1984, G. dijugus Kelly and Bromley, 1984, G. torpedo Kelly and Bromley, 1984, Oichnus paraboloides Bromley, 1981, O. simplex Bromley, 1981, Petroxestes pera Wilson and Palmer, 1988, cf. Rogerella isp. and Trypanites solitarius (Hagenow, 1840). Macrofaunal, ichnological and sedimentological evidence suggest that the Grand Bay Formation is a deep-water turbiditic sequence. Its faunas, overwhelmingly dominated by abundant and diverse molluscs, are allochthonous and comprise a mix of nonmarine, shallow-marine and deeper-water taxa. Only shallow-marine taxa exhibit evidence of macroborings, but even these are scantily represented, only 30 samples containing borings having been retrieved. We speculate that the rarity of macroborings reflects a combination of taphonomic processes prior to resedimentation and final burial.
